A Few Newsletter Tips
Format: A folded 11 x 17 format looks better and is less expensive to print and
mail than any other option. It is also a more convenient size for your audience
to read, copy or keep.

Design: A clean uncluttered design attracts readers. Avoid lots of clip art and
fancy fonts. Text over dark backgrounds and reverse type (white type on a
solid background) are hard to read. Design for easy reading.

Fonts: Best to keep the number of fonts (typestyles) to 3 or less. A block letter
(sans serif) font like
Helvetica or Arial is good for headlines or ad text. A serif
font like
Times is easier to read. You can add variety and emphasis by changing
the size of a single font and by using bold, italics or underlines. All caps are
hard to read so use them only for emphasis - NOT FOR ALL TEXT.

Language: Short sentences and simple words work best. No jargon or fancy
vocabulary please. Spell check and proof read your work several times!

Accent Color: A second ink color adds visual appeal to a newsletter and
doesn't have to be expensive. For instance, an accent color can be set up so
that the same printing plate can be used each month or so that a year's supply
can be printed in advance. Only the black text and art changes each issue and
that saves money. If your budget is tight, use an accent color and black on the
outside and only black ink on the inside.
