If you mail regularly to the same mail list using standard mail (bulk), you can get
valuable, free address change info from a service request (endorsement) mailed
1st class to the same list.
Most service endorsements are no extra charge on 1st class mail.
A 1st class postcard is an inexpensive way to update a prospect list that you
normally do not mail 1st class. Postage savings similar to bulk mail are possible
for presorted 1st class postcard mailings of 500 pieces or more.
Service endorsements on standard mail (bulk) incur a cost.
You pay for each notice based on 1st class postage for the notification plus any
separate fees for the service. You only pay for the returned pieces but the fee is
payable to your carrier at time of delivery of the returned pieces. You can't
change your mind because a lot of pieces came back and it became expensive. If
the request is on your mail piece, you are obligated for the cost of the service.
The service endorsement options affect how your mail is handled if a person on
your list submits a change of address forwarding order. You also get feedback on
undeliverable mail (the person moved and no forwarding info is available).
Change of address info is only provided for 18 months so a 1st class mailing once
per year is a good plan.
The 1st class endorsements to consider are:
Return Service Requested:
No forwarding, fast feedback, no charge.
Your mail piece is returned with the new address or reason for non-delivery.
Recommended for fast feedback.
Forwarding Service Requested (or no endorsement):
Forwarding, slow feedback, no charge.
Months 1-12 - forwarding at no charge.
Months 13-18 - return at no charge with new address or reason for nondelivery.
After month 18 - return at no charge with the reason for nondelivery.
Not recommended unless you need forwarding.
Address Service Requested:
Forwarding and fast feedback but costs extra.
Months 1-12 - forwarding at no charge plus a separate change notice sent to you
with the new address info for a fee of $.70 per piece. If undeliverable, return at
no charge with reason for non-delivery.
Months 13-18 - return at no charge with new address or reason for nondelivery .
After month 18 - return at no charge with the reason for nondelivery.
Not recommended unless you are willing to pay the fee for fast feedback.
